This study confirms the positive effect of ionic liquid content in neat polymer on mix gas (CO2/H2) separation. The sorption of CO2 increases with increasing content of [emim][dca] in PVA polymer membranes. The sorption of H2 was negligible in all measured membranes even with highest content of [emim][dca] in PVA. All single gas permeation experiments clearly show increasing permeability of CO2 and H2 with increasing content of ionic liquid in studied polymer. During separation of both gasses, the solution diffusion mechanism is applied. Based on these results we can state that with higher content of [emim][dca] in PVA permeability of both gasses and also ideal selectivity increases. This observation shows a potential of IL where is higher sorption of CO2 than in polymer as good separation medium for CO2/H2 separation.

Separation of Carbon Dioxide from Methane by Ionic Liquid Membrane
Kárászová, Magda ; Izák, Pavel
Work deals with ionic liquid membranes for separation of carbon dioxide and methane. Main advantage of ionic liquid is negligible vapor pressure and low chemical reactivity. [1]. Selectivity of liquid membranes is given by different solubility of separated gases in chosen liquid. Carbon dioxide is twenty times more soluble in used ionic liquid than methane. Membrane used for separation consisted of porous PVDF and ionic liquid [emim][Tf2N]. Permeability of pure gases and model mixtures through the membrane was tested. Ideal selectivity of the membranes for CO2/CH4 mixture was found to be 22. Permeability of pure gases does was only about 10% higher than permeability of mixed gases. The membrane may be applied for purification of biogas.
